【Pulau Kukup National Park ククップ島国立公園】

Pulau Kukup is one of the largest inhabited mangrove site in the world and in 2003, it was recognised as RAMSAR Site (Wetland of International Imortance) by the Geneva-based Ramsar Convention Bureau. Mangrove forests maintain the biodiversity by providing shelter to the animals like monkeys or wild boars and also home to numerous species of birds and provide the oppertunity to witness different species for bird lovers. It can only reach there by boat but a short ride from Kukup Jetty. If you hope to see the mangrove birds, it is good to be as early as 7am, otherwise, it is more interesting to visit the site at low tide.

ここは世界でも有数のマングローブ保護地区で、2003年ラムサールの指定公園となりました。マングローブとは海水と淡水が混ざる海岸や河口に育つ森林を意味していて、またそれを構成する植物は世界になんと100種以上もあるそうです。クックプ国立公園のマングローブは熱帯マレーシアを代表するたくさんの種が見られるとか。またこの自然には湿原を好むマッドスキッパー、巻貝やカニ、猿やイノシシ、たくさんの種類の鳥も生息しています。生き物で溢れるマングローブはまた他の生き物を寄せつけるのですね。遊歩道に沿って歩く事５分、突き当りに五階建ての見晴らし台があります。そこからは360℃のマングローブ林が。。。ボートで来たはずなのに海すらみえません！最近の研究によりマングローブは海岸浸食を防ぎ、また自然災害を軽減する役目を果たすなど重要性が叫ばれています。保護活動が活発になってきているのは、喜ばしことです。
